Search: find potentially relevant things
Search is powerful when a query can be translated into documents, products or records. Ranking estimates relevance. It does not by itself establish whether the highest-ranked option fits a person’s objective, constraints and acceptable trade-offs.
Generative AI: produce a useful response
A generative model can explain, compare and propose. Its fluency can reduce the effort of working through information. But a proposal remains a proposal. Confidence in the wording is not proof that the evidence is sufficient or that the answer is suitable.
Resolution: establish the next justified step
Resolution begins with what someone is trying to make true. It makes criteria and uncertainty explicit, preserves what remains true when facts change, and separates suitability from execution. Sometimes the resolved answer is to wait, ask for better evidence or conclude that nothing fits.
The governance boundary
A system should not let commercial availability redefine the objective. The model can propose; it cannot make itself true. Fit cannot be bought. Those are governance requirements, not interface preferences.
